The city recognized the growing need for baseball fields in the city and rolled up their sleeves to transform an old concrete dumping ground into a baseball four-plex. The project began with dedicated employees and rented equipment and ultimately resulted in a center complete with a concession stand, restroom facilities, and retired seating from actual Major League Baseball stadiums. The Kent Johnson Memorial Baseball Complex, named after a former city employee, opened in the spring of 2013. Since then, there have been numerous tournaments held at the complex, bringing hundreds of visitors to the city. This boost to the economy has filled hotels, restaurants, shops, and local attractions. The complex is an investment that not only provides a place for baseball lovers, it completes the hometown feel of the city’s Southeast Park where residents can also fish, play, picnic, and jog.
